CNY 2 - Yong

Yong informed me that last Thursday 29/1, there would be a lion dance at his home. After our discussion on the midnight after Lim’s house, Asri & Azmi agreed to make plan for Chinese New Year to Yong’s home in Labi. Therefore, we informed others about this on the next day. Yong invited us to come at 1030AM so we had to left Bandar at 8.

I met Asri at Jerudong Park as usual and waited there for a while at 730AM. Fuze, Azmi and Aniz also with us. Azam, Elly and Zali said that they will be late so we went for a murtabak breakfast at Wanika restaurant near Mahrin & Azmi’s simpang. Azam and Zali joined us there while Sanul and G-Raiz waited at JP. Elly, Lim and Radi cancelled their plan to join us due certain reason.

We left JP around 9 and stopped at the Sg. Liang Recreational to wait for DD. Sanul, G-Raiz and Zali had a quick breakfast at a restaurant there while we went to Luangan Lalak after DD joined us. I forgot to inform Chad that we already at Sg. Liang so Chad came on separate way after us with Ho & their 2 friends. There were floods on the way to Yong’s home.

The journey was quite long until you became zombie!

We reached Yong’s place around 11 and luckily the lion dance haven’t started yet. We were served with crackers, biscuit, fruits, soft drinks and cakes there. We sat at the garage waiting for the ‘lion’ to come. While waiting, of course Zali, Sanul & G-Raiz busied with their camera while others talks or wander around.

The ‘lion’ finally arrived! A jeep and van came to Yong’s home and there were kids & people from Chung Hwa association wearing all red attire from the cars. There were the lion dance performer. Two person take the role to be lion by wearing a lion costume while another group used gong, clamper and beat to make a rhythm for the lion to dance.

The lion’s coming!

The Chung Hwa people’s coming

The lion dance was believed by the Chinese to cast bad spirit away from the home. It looked like the lion was alive but actually it was just an act (of course the 2 guys are alive). The lion dance was like real lion in which the 2 persons had to work together to act like 4 legged lion. (Duh! Lion got 4 legs le!) A person had to guide the lion to walk around by giving hand signal. The tributes for the ritual were the mandarin oranges. It took a long while for the lion to ‘eat’ and prepared the oranges though.

The lion had prepared Yong and Yong’s dad the oranges.

We had chance to have photo with the lion and all the people from the Chung Hwa. I didn’t ready my camera that time so I didn’t have it. Anyway, we were also given chance to take our group photos with the instruments they used.

Group photos of us who joined.

Happy Chinese New Year to Yong!

After the performance, Yong brought us to visit his farm. We decided to go for Ho’s home next but Ho brought us to his ‘sifu’ home in Labi.

By the way, here’s an extra information and tips from Yong:

This is an exercise if you want to have Chinese’s eyes!
(See Azmi! Yong, is this really working?)
